Embracing the Past by Katie Sladek

As I finish my last day in Korea, I have been reminiscing about all of the wonderful sites and attractions that I have been able to see. There have been so many adventures during this trip, and a good deal of them have had a modern element. From traveling on rail bikes, riding on a glass-bottom cable car up a mountain, to singing karaoke until late in the night, this trip has had more than its fair share of memory-making experiences.

One thing that I have noticed, though, is how much the Korean people embrace their history and culture as well. Some of the most interesting and memorable parts of this trip were touring ancient temples and palaces or learning about ancient song and dance from the amazing faculty at CNUE. Learning how to play the Janggu, a traditional Korean drum, was a highlight of this trip that I will not forget and the concert that was performed by the music faculty and students afterwards was fantastic.

I have had an absolutely amazing time in Korea and have learned so much while traveling here. The Fulbright-Hays Scholarship Program has given me such an incredible opportunity, and I can’t wait to pass on everything that I have learned to my fellow educators and students!
